The Sports Funk

I am in the midst of a heavy duty, foggy, cloudy, “I don’t know why I even pay attention to sports” sports funk.  In the span of 48 hours this weekend, the following things happened:

-Everyone’s Favorite Goalie (aka John Curry) lost his first NHL start for the Pittsburgh Penguins on Friday against the Buffalo Sabres. Despite the Pittsburgh announcers practically blowing out their microphones with the calls of his crazy contortionist saves in the third period, the Penguins defense neglected to play, and he was defenseless against four goals.  I was able to view the FSN Pittsburgh coverage online, and on the bright side, the announcers and commentators did seem quite fond of Curry, and very pleased with his performance.   It just would have been nicer if Sidney Crosby’s hat trick from Saturday had occurred one day earlier to help Curry out.  Continue reading

The Arizona Cardinals Hate Me, But I Love the Icebreaker

Excuse my hiatus from the blog the past two weeks.  Not only have I been pursuing other projects in my spare time, I also have been overcome with work.  This is not unexpected, as any reader of my blog for the past few years knows, because when the Red Sox make the playoffs, the whole “make sure students don’t riot” responsibility gets added to my job (and several others in my office and at the university.)

I have two blog entries upcoming – one on jerseys (no, I’m not turning into UniWatch), and the other on biking. Both should be finished shortly.  But here are a few short notes to tide you over.

The Arizona Cardinals hate me – In late September of 1999, Arizona Aeneas Williams slipped by San Francisco 49er center Jeremy Newberry to level a devastating hit to an already concussed Steve Young to knock him unconscious (although Young would never admit to that, the tape proves otherwise) and end Young’s career.  I watched it live on Monday Night Football, and I doubt I’ll ever forget that hit.

Fast forward to October 5, 2008.  Arizona Cardinal Adrian Wilson slips by a distracted Buffalo Bills offensive line to level a late hit on Bills quarterback Trent Edwards, by some reports knocking him briefly unconscious and taking him out of the game with a concussion.  Thank goodness Edwards is young and the Bills have a bye this Sunday.

Dear Arizona Cardinals: What have I ever done to you? Continue reading

Dear Mr. Favre: We Also Like Cheese, Beer and Lots o’ Snow (with random thoughts at the end)

Dear Mr. Favre:

Busted Tee's Free Farve shirt - anyone want to buy it for me?

I understand you currently have a tad bit of drama in your life. A few months back, you thought it best to retire from the sport you loved, because everyone was chomping at the bit for you to. All of us football fans had been anticipating your retirement for the last eight years, as all of your contemporaries hung up the cleats. But over those years, you still had the skills and desire to play, and fortunately, weren’t racked by debilitating concussions or other injuries that have forced some quarterbacks out too soon (gratuitous Steve Young reference of the post.) So you stayed in the NFL, losing some of your effectiveness as a quarterback and as a leader in the locker room (your teammates grew up watching you play – you’re from a completely different generation as yours) but still leading the Green Bay Packers to respectable seasons.

If He Coached Steve Young, He’s Good Enough For Me

Updated at the end of the post later in the day on 1/16/08: Quick post because I’m thrown off by going to a hockey game tonight (because my body now thinks its the weekend, and wants to stay up late, but alas, it’s only Tuesday): Norm Chow was fired as offensive coordinator of the Titans today, proving that he can only successfully work with one quarterback with the last name of Young in his lifetime. For those of you unfamiliar, Chow is one in a line of NFL coaches with time served at the one and only Brigham Young University. Other coaches with BYU roots include Andy Reid and Mike Holmgren (further proof that they are either twins or one and the same person.) Continue reading

Better Know a Compliance Rule #1:Don’t Mind the Size You’re Wearing, Mind the Size of Your Label

First, my disclaimer – I am not a compliance official of any sort.  I have a weird fascination with NCAA compliance.  The material below is just my interpretation of the rules in a easily digestible form for fans.  It should not be used by student-athletes or athletics officials for any formal use.

Anyone who works with me knows that I am a NCAA Compliance geek. I don’t know exactly how my interest in these daunting regulations began, but I suspect it might have began with being exposed to housing regulations as they related to the new residence hall where I worked and lived my senior year. Just When I Was Starting to Forget that Jerry Jones May In Fact Be Evil — My Bills versus Cowboys Running Diary

Seeing that the Bills only make Monday Night Football appearances every thirteen years, I figured I should probably record it for perpetuity. Well, that and I wasn’t able to join the Bills Backers of Boston down at their big Monday night party at The Harp because I had to work super early the next morning, so I had to do something special to mark the occasion. Instead, it became a running diary of how sad and trying it is to be a Bills fan and a Western New York native, especially whenever you face any professional sports team from Dallas.
